Every reality show has at least one villain. As Sima and the show itself frequently remind us, arranged marriage is not quite the form of social control it used to be; everyone here emphasizes that they have the right to choose or refuse the matches presented to them. But as becomes especially clear when Sima works in India, that choice is frequently and rather roughly pressured by an anvil of social expectations and family duty. In the most extreme case, a year-old prospective groom named Akshay Jakhete is practically bullied by his mother, Preeti, into choosing a bride. Indian Matchmaking smartly reclaims and updates the arranged marriage myth for the 21st century, demystifying the process and revealing how much romance and heartache is baked into the process even when older adults are meddling every step of the way. Though these families use a matchmaker, the matching process is one the entire community and culture is invested in. Director Smriti Mundhra told Jezebel that she pitched the show around Sima, who works with an exclusive set of clients. Yet the show merely explains that for many Indian men, bright, bubbly, beautiful Nadia is not a suitable match. The parents task Sima with following multiple stringent expectations. Some are understandably cultural, perhaps: A preference for a certain language or religion, or for astrological compatibility, which remains significant for many Hindus.

A quarter of a million dollars is a lot to pay for a dating service. But Selective Search is not a dating service. The process begins with a tell-us-everything intake interview: 15 pages of questions that assess not just what clients want for the future interests, values, desire for family, deal-breakers but also how their attitudes are influenced by their past relationships. From that input, the company produces a document detailing more than personal, professional, and social preferences specified by the client.
Those criteria are matched against Selective Search’s database of more than , eligibles. They also go out to the company’s 90 scouts–well-connected people around the country who shake their networks for promising matches in the client’s designated regions. Potential matches undergo the same in-depth personal interviews as clients.

When you sign up with Colorado Springs Matchmakers, you are buying a service which doesn’t come without risk. Shane Weisberg, the company’s owner, says matchmaking takes time and there’s no guarantees the people they set you up with will lead to a long-lasting friendship or marriage. Three local singles all say they were convinced Colorado Springs Matchmakers would help spice up their love life by pairing them with other compatible singles.
After signing up, all three singles says they started to question the matchmaking service, pointing out their “first dates” appeared to be with random people they didn’t have much in common with. Debbie says her first match was with a retired police officer, but claims the company failed to disclose some important information about him.
He said he couldn’t drive or sit up. They said because of his physical health they would start all over again. He says the company then sent him two more matches, but alleges both women backed out of meeting when he says they were into watching sports, and he wasn’t. However, if you ask Weisberg, he says the “small” group of people voicing concerns aren’t giving his matchmaking company enough time to make things right. They like that. That’s a selling point, but when they are at home and when they are alone, they don’t appreciate that as much.
The truth of the matter is that if singles were really really good at matching themselves, they wouldn’t be single.
